It is reported that W. E. Rice will shortly resign the local agency of the L. & N. and return to Mt. Vernon, Ind.

C. E. Mitchell who recently forged the name of G. W. Merritt of Opdyke on a check for $10 which he successfully passed on Ben Lisenby, has been located in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Mrs. L. L. Record, who for sometime has been ill with typhoid fever, is somewhat improved.

Senetor W. Duff Piercy will be the Democratic speaker at the political session of the Centralia Chauttauqua this afternoon.

John Marteeny, who was hurt in an explosion of Fourth of July fireworks, has sufficiently recovered that he was to resume his work as rural mail carrier today.

Andy Hall, Jr., who is an interne in the Missouri Baptist hospital in St. Louis, has successfully passed the state board of health examination in Florida, which enables him to practice medicine in that state.

The Jefferson county automobile dealers served a chicken dinner yesterday evening at six o'clock at the First Christian Church.

Checks were mailed yesterday to depositers of the Jefferson State Bank for the first dividend on their claims. The bank has been in the hands of a receiver exactly six months.

An auto collision took place this afternoon in which the car of Lena Gunter and the car of a colored man, John Steward, were involved.

Dr. Andy Hall, chairman of the Republican county central committee, City Attorney Curtis Williams, Mayor W. D. Isaac, City Clerk John M. Ayers and Officer Roy Britton of the city police force, will attend notification ceremonies for Gov. Alfred M. Landon, GOP candidate for president tomorrow night.

Mr. and Mrs. Warren Rutherford, Lennes Threlkeld and Miss Harriet Pinnell spent Sunday in St. Louis where they took the boat trip on the President and attended Municipal Opera.

Mr and Mrs Carl Gast of St Louis were visitors in city last evening at home of Mr and Mrs L.G.Sever.They were accompanied home by Miss Frances Sever and Miss Elizabeth Keen who will remain for visit.

Miss Lilly Pierce, Mrs B.E.Gaskins, Mrs Alice Williams, and Mrs Lillian Correll were visitors in Centralia on saturday, where they attended a personal meeting by the W.P.A.

Floyd Boyd has returned to Geneva Il, after visiting with M.H.Boyd and family of Boyd.

May Heil of Kankakee will spend tomorrow with W.C.Payne and family of this city., then to Mc cleansboro where she will visit at home of Noell Heil and family.

Velma Mayberry and Bertha Fitts have returned from Camp Forrest where they visited with Sgt. Bill Atchison and Corp Clarence Pearson.

Private Foster Summers is expected to arrive home Friday night fter three days of leave from Camp Forrest Tn.

Miss Helen Cates has returned from Clearwater Fl. where she has spent the last several months.

Mrs. Lucille Greathouse and son Charles Neal and Arthur Puckett spent the weekend at Camp Forrest Tn visiting with Sgt Howard Greathouse.

Mr and Mrs Max Reed have departed to Birmingham Ala where they expect to make their home.

Donald Elliott, 16 son of Mr and Mrs Dwight Elliott, of rfd 2 Wayne City,was operated on for appendicitis at a hospital in Granite City, he is doing good.

JEFFERSON CO. F.S.A. COUNCIL

The following Jefferson county people have been appointed as members of the Jefferson county F.S.A. Council to assist with the Farm Security Administration prgram for the coming year:

Big crowds bid goodbye to soldiers at depot.August quota received.

Jefferson county, which last night sent 30 men to Chicago,for induction into the U.S.Army, will be represented by 14 men in an early August draft call.

Mt.Vernon Draft board no 1 this morning was ordered to send eight men to Chicago on August 8, while draft board no 2 received a 6-man quota.

Officals said the two groups will leave Mt Vernon via the C&E I at 9;45 am on thursday Aug.7th and are scheduled to take an exam for induction in Chicago the following morning.

A large crowd of well wishers packed the depot platform last night to bid good bye to the 30 men who are taking the exams.

The men representing the board no 2,posed for pictures for the Register News, then were guests at a dinner before marching to the depot.

The 11 men representing board 1, met at the office, had pictures made for newspaper, then went to depot, where they visited with sweethearts, relatives and friends until the train pulled in.

The Mt Vernon Home Guards commanded by Lewis Brake marched in formation down Main st to the depot a few minutes before train time to meet with the draftee.

The Home Guards were attired in their new bright blue uniforms.

They replaced the National Guard company which is now in army service at Camp Forrest, Tenn.

Mt.Vernons tenth annual egg day will be held Thursday, Aug 7, it was decided today at a meeting of a special committee of the Chamber of Commerce.

The event at which MTV merchants hold a special sale, will be featured as usual by the Register News acceptance of fresh eggs at above market prices as payment of mail subscriptions.

Civil War Veteran Dies July 21, 1941

W. R. Daniels, 96 years old, Civil War vet, passed away at St Marys hospital in Decatur following a brief illness. He was a resident of McLeansboro, served four years and marched thru Georgia with Sherman.

He was residing at the time with his daughter L.L. Smith of Decatur.

BOB WHITLOCK, is sergeant in ARMY.

Bob Whitlock, Mt Vernon draftee at Boulder City Nevada has been promoted to rank of sergeant after four months in service. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Jess Whitlock of 317 s, 15th st. He is assigned to a Military Police battalion.

DEATHS

Word has been received of death of Mrs Rebecca Hyde on Sunday in Decatur, she was the mother of Walter Hyde, Mt. Vernon contractor.

Up until last few years, she had resided in McClellan township , Jefferson county. She was born in De Witt county, Feb 9, 1863, In 1888, she married William Hyde who preceded her in death Jan. 21, 1904.

She is survived by Walter of Mt Vernon, Warren and Clarence of Elk Prairie, Erwin and George of Decatur and Owen of Danville: seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Services will be held at the Christian Church in Clinton at 1;30 weds,; and the body will remain at the Moran Funeral Parlors in Decatur until it is taken to Clinton for burial.

MARRIAGES

Burton Mathus of Mt Vernon and Mrs Frankie Van Velson of Waltonville were united in marriage July 4th in Jackson Mo.

Mr. Mathus is engaged in farming and Mrs Mathus was employed several years as bookkeeper of Third National Bank and is now a bookkeeper in the First National Bank. They will make their home on their farm near Waltonville.

A double wedding ceremony was performed Sunday July 20th in St Louis at which time, Glen Willus and Mary Shirley and Orval Book and Lena Cook were married.

Reverend W.C.Campbell officiated and the two couples were accompanied by Mrs Frank Willus.

Mr Willus is son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Willus of Ina, and Mrs. Willus is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Shirley of this city. They will make their home here where they are both employed.

Mr. Book is son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Book of Ina and Mrs. Book is daughter of Mr and Mrs Nubern Cook of Ina, they will reside in Bonnie.

Mrs. Chester Finn announces the marriage of her daughter, Betty Arnold to Louis Sturam of Harrisburg, Il, which occurred June 29 1941 in Cape Girardeau Mo.

They were attended by Paul and Helen Sturam, brother and sister of the groom.

They will make their home in Mt. Vernon.

Announcement has been made of the marriage of Hugh Wade and Madalyn Phillips.

The ceremony was performed in Cape Girardeau, Saturday evening by the Rev. W.E.Hill.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Phillips of RFD 2.

The couple will make their home at 308 North 5th st in Mt. Vernon.

Mr and Mrs John Curtis of Bluford announce the marriage of the formers brother, George Curtis of Odin and Mrs. Dicy Stull of Dalgren, which took place Saturday July 19 at the city hall in St Louis.

Rev. Will Beard of the United Brethren church of Bluford officiated.

They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. John Curtis & Mrs. Will Beard of Bluford.

They will make their home in Dalgren.

HOSPITAL NOTES

Mr. and Mrs. V.L. Motley of 411 S. 6th are the parents of a son born today. He has been named John Lloyd.

Mrs Charles Helm underwent an operation.

Miss Myra Campbell was removed to her home today.

Mrs Claude Knight underwent an operation this morning.
