Joseph Boyd

Joseph Boyd was married on November 25, 1872, to Mary Ann Carter in Lincoln County, Kentucky. In 1888, they moved to Webber Township in Jefferson County. John Carter, with his brother, Thomas, ancestor of President Carter, came to Virginia from England on the "Safety", in 1635. Mrs. Boyd's grandfather, Jesse Carter, served in the latter part of the Revolutionary War. Her parents, Elijah and Kitty Singleton Carter, are buried at Greenfield Cemetery in Illinois.

Joseph and Mary Boyd had ten children:

  1. James;
  2. Sarah Jane;
  3. Luella;
  4. Hardin;
  5. Kitty;
  6. Lena;
  7. Otto;
  8. Belva;
  9. Jesse; and
  10. Estella.

Joseph died in 1896 and his wife in 1902. They are buried at Harmony cemetery. Only two of this Boyd family are living today, Otto Boyd, of Michigan, who is 92, and Belva Adams, of Springfield, is 89 years old.

Lena E. Boyd married George W. Minor on December 25, 1900. They had thirteen children:

  1. Beulah;
  2. Bert;
  3. Glenn;
  4. Edith;
  5. Marvin;
  6. Ruby;
  7. Maurice;
  8. Gladys;
  9. Carl;
  10. Roy;
  11. Ruth;
  12. Beatrice; and
  13. Imogene.

Two children, Ruby and Gladys, died as infants. Carl and Roy served their country in World War II; both served in the Army Infantry in the South Pacific.

Mr. Minor was a farmer and also a carpenter, and for a time, had a sorghrum mill at their home in Farrington Township. Two sons, Glenn and Maurice, are now deceased. George Minor passed away in July, 1946, and Lena Minor in March, 1969.

Just before World War II, free shows were held at the country store one night each week. It was here that Imogene Minor met her future husband in 1941. Floyd Phelps served in the Marine Air Force from February, 1943, and was discharged December I, 1946, after serving eighteen months in the South Pacific with a fighter squadron. On April 14, 1946, Imogene Minor was married to Floyd Phelps in Mt. Vernon. They lived for five years near Camp Ground, later moving to a farm near Bonnie, which was purchased in 1965. They moved then to their home west of Dareville.

Their daughter, Rita, Mrs. Roger Williams, her husband and two daughters, Traci and Alison, and their son, Stanley, and wife Elaine, and daughter, Amber, live nearby in Elk Prairie Township. One daughter, Cheryl, Mrs. Fred Tisdale, lives in Tuscola, Illinois. Floyd was an auto mechanic for 18 years and the last 14 years has been as garage foreman at Marion Federal Prison.

Other descendants of the Minor family still residing in Jefferson County are: Roy Minor and wife, Pauline, of Mt. Vernon. Roy is a Mt. Vernon taxi cab owner. Their daughter, Mrs. John (Karen) Fitzpatrick, sons, Christopher and Kelly, also reside in Mt. Vernon. Mrs. Walter (Ruth) Jackson of Webber Township, their daughters, Mrs. Lanier (Glenda) Blackman, and Mrs. Alan (Marilyn) Hutchison and daughter, Stacy.

Mr. Jackson is an employee of General Radiator and a veteran of World War II having served in the Army in Europe. Mrs. John (Beatrice) Gnevo, of Elk Prairie Township, and daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Susan) Gajewski, and Mrs. David (Betty) Stelmazewski. Mr. Gnevo is a self-employed farmer, and a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army in Europe.
