Dr. W. A. Hughey was born March 9, 1836, in Crittenden County, Ky., son of John R. Hughey, a native of Virginia, a farmer. He came to this county in 1869, and is yet living here, having reached the ripe old of seventy years. The mother of our subject is Polly Ann (Crider) Hughey, a native of Kentucky; she is yet living and the mother of nine children. Our subject is principally self-educated, recieving his primary education in Kentucky. At the age of twenty-one he commenced the practice of medicine in Wayne County, Ill. He came to this county in 1857, and has been here most of the time since. He is yet following his profession in Belle Rive. In September, 1861, he enlisted in the forty-eighth Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Company F, serving three years and three months. He participated in many thrilling battles, among others that of Ft. Donelson, Jackson, Mission Ridge, Atlanta and others. The Doctor taught one term of school after the war, and then farmed one year and finally took up the medical profession. He was married, in 1859, to Lois Smith, a native of this county, born November, 1840. She is the mother of eight children, viz., Rosa V., Isaac A., Thomas L. M., Sarah B. (deceased), John S., Lenora L., Joanna M. and Benjamin F. Mr. and Mrs. Hughey are religiously connected with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He is a Republican. William Allen HUGHEY was born 9 March 1836 in Piney Fork, then Livingston County, Kentucky. William Allen was the first of nine children of John Robert (1812-1891) and Mary "Polly" [Crider] (1817-1894) HUGHEY. The other children of John R and Polly HUGHEY were: John Henry (1838-1923); Isaac Newton (1840-1908); Jacob Lycurgus (1843-1928); Daniel Washington (1846-1890); Sarah Louisa (1848-1932); Thomas Martin (1851-1925); Mary Malvina (1854-19--); and Franklin Lafayette (1857-1946). William Allen's paternal grandparents Allen (1783-1835) and Sarah Mariah [Waggoner] (1786-1857) HUGHEY were married in Pittyslvania County, Virginia on 7 January 1812. About 1815 Allen and Sarah relocated to Kentucky where they settled in the Piney Fork area of then Livingston County. They are buried in Piney Fork Cemetery. William Allen's maternal grandparents Henry (1795-1849) and Catherine [Crider] (1794-1859) CRIDER were married 7 December 1813 in Livingston County, Kentucky. Henry and Catherine were first cousins. Their fathers, Daniel CRIDER, Jr and Jacob B CRIDER were both sons of Daniel and Catherine (Berger) CRIDER, Sr. They are buried in Piney Fork Cemetery. In 1857, William Allen moved to Harris Grove, Jefferson County, Illinois to study medicine under his uncle Cristopher Martin HUGHEY (1826-?). In Jefferson County, William Allen met Lois SMITH. Lois, daughter of Anderson (1814-1872) and Elizabeth Callahan [Hopper] (1811-1870) SMITH, was born in Jefferson County, Illinois on 28 November 1840. William Allen HUGHEY and Lois SMITH were married at Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois on 27 September 1859 by the Rev. John GIBSON. Dr. William A. HUGHEY enlisted in the Union Army for a period of three years on 12 September 1861 at Centralia, Marion, Illinois. He was mustered into service at Camp Butler, Illinois on 28 October 1861 and assigned to Company F of the 48th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. At the time of his enlistment Dr. HUGHEY was described as 5'10" in height, black hair, blue eyes with a fair complexion, The 48th Illinois was assigned to Grant's Expeditionary Command and saw action at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, and Vicksburg. Dr. HUGHEY was mustered out of service on 9 Nov 1864 at Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee and returned to his family in Jefferson County, Illinois. The town of Belle Rive In Jefferson County, Illinois was established in 1871. Dr. HUGHEY relocated from Harris Grove and became one the first doctors to open his practice in Belle Rive. In combination with his medical practice in Belle Rive, Dr. HUGHEY operated a general store and pharmacy with his son-in-law, James Henry WOMELDUFF. On 23 November 1877 the State of Illinois granted Dr. William A. HUGHEY a license to practice medicine based on "Years of Practice in Illinois". Dr. HUGHEY was granted a pension for his military service due to a partial disability caused by "disease of the bowels". In early 1894 Dr. HUGHEY's condition became so serious that he was only able to leave his bed for very short periods at a time. By September, Dr. HUGHEY was emaciated and totally bedridden. Dr. William Allen HUGHEY died of colon cancer at the age of 58 years, 8 months and 11 days on 20 November 1894. The funeral service was held at the M. E. Church in Belle Rive by his pastor, Rev. J. K. HUNTER. Dr HUGHEY was buried in Flint Cemetery at Belle Rive, Jefferson, Illinois. DR. WILLIAM ALLEN HUGHEY Dr. William A. Hughey was born March 9th, 1836, In Crittenden county, Ky., and departed this life November 20th, 1894, aged 58 years, 8 months and 11 days. He emigrated from the State of his nativity in 1857 to Jefferson county, IIlinois. He was married September 27, 1850, to Miss Lois Smith. As a result of this union, eight children, four boys and four girls, were born, all of whom, with the exception of one girl, are yet living. In early manhood, he chose the practice of medicine as his profession and pursued his calling with great energy up to the time of his last illness. September the l0th, 1861, he enlisted in the 18th regiment Illinois Volunteers Infantry, Company F., and served his country faithfully for three years and three months. He became a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church in 1872 this denomination disbanding, he cast his lot with the Methodists and filled several prom inent offices in this church. He was a man possessed of more than ordinary intellectual ability and always expressed a strong confidence and lively hope in the promises of inspiration. The people or the community in which the deceased resided are his friends, and would willingly testify to his noble christian qualities, fatherly acts and husbandlly kindness. The funeral servers were conducted at the M. E. church in Belle Rive, by his pastor, Rev. J. K.. Hunter, Wednesday, Nov. 21, and the great concourse of people attending showed the honor and respect in which he was held in the county as well as in, the church and family. We mourn, but his trusting so implicitly in a loving Savior and passing away with a smile, rejoicing in Christ, gives us joy in our sadness. J. KH. HUGHEY enlisted in the Union army for a period of three years on 14 September 1861 at Ford's Ferry, Crittenden County, Kentucky. He was mustered into service at Camp Butler, Illinois on 31 October 1861 and assigned to Company E of the 48th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. At the time of his enlistment Isaac was described as 5'8" in height, black hair, black eyes with a dark complexion. The 48th Illinois was subsequently assigned to Grant's Expeditionary Command and saw action at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, and Vicksburg. Isaac was promoted to sergeant, and to captain on 1 April 1865. Isaac was mustered out of service on 15 August 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas and returned to his father's residence in Piney Fork. Isaac chose the field of medicine as his life's profession. When and where he began his study is unknown, however, when he enlisted in the Union army in 1861 Isaac gave his occupation as farmer. After the war, he may have, like his brother William Allen before him, studied under his uncle, Dr. Christopher Martin HUGHEY. Little is known of Isaac's post-war life from 1865 until about 1877. It was probably during this period of time that he completed his study of medicine. On 18 October 1870 Isaac N HUGHEY and Rosa MCCOY were married by Rev. R. W. HOOKER in Princeton, Caldwell, Kentucky. Rosie MCCOY was born 13 October 1852 in Illinois. There were no children born to this marriage. About 1877, Dr. HUGHEY and Rosie moved to Iroquois, Kingsbury, then Dakota Territory, now South Dakota where he opened his first private practice. According to family tradition, during this time he was the physician to a local indian tribe. In February 1895, Dr. HUGHEY and Rosie moved to Pomona, Los Angeles, California where he continued his medical practice. On 11 April 1908, while operating on a patient, Isaac cut his right thumb. Blood poisoning set in very quickly and in an attempt to slow the spread of the infection, his right arm was amputated. He lapsed into unconsicousness on April 14th. On the morning of 16 April 1908, at the age of 67 years, 5 months and 12 days, Dr. Isaac Newton HUGHEY died of systemic gangrene at Pomona Valley Hospital having never regained consicousness. Funeral services were held at 2:30 on 17 April 1908 and Dr. HUGHEY was buried in Pomona Cemetery. After the death of her husband, Rosie HUGHEY remained in Pomona where she died of breast cancer on 22 December 1934 at the age of 82 years, 2 months and 9 days.
