FRANCIS C. PETTYPOOL - born in Herald's Prairie, February 15, 1843, was a son of Braxton B. and Celia (McGhee) Pettypool, natives of Tennessee. His grandparents, Thomas Pettypool and Parent McGhee, were natives of Virginia and moved to Tennessee at an early day. BRAXTON PETTYPOOL was married three times.

The children of the first marriage were:

2. Thomas B.
3. Francis C.
4. Mahulda
5. Tilitha C.
6. Sarah E.
7. John H. (deceased)

His second wife was Polly Ann Catlin Tichenor. Their children were:

1. Joel R.
2. Ezekiel
3. Marshal
4. Newton (deceased)

His third wife was Mary, daughter of John Jones, OF JEFFERSON COUNTY. Their children are:

1. Lear
2. Dora
3. Hardon.

He has been a resident of JEFFERSON COUNTY for 12 years.

Francis C.'s early life was spent in this county on a farm and going to school. When 19 years of age he enlisted in Company I, 87th Illinois Infantry.

He married Mahala E., daughter of James W. Hart, one of White County's oldest citizens, who makes his home with his daughter.

Mr. and Mrs. Pettypool have three children:

1. Thomas C.
2. Edgar L.
3. Vienna A.

The Tennessee bend has the reputation of being a hot-bed of fever and ague, and its inhabitants of being pale and sickly, but Mr. Pettypool has lived there his entire life, except while in the army, and he has always been remarkably healthy, which goes far toward proving the fallacy of the statement.

He has a fine apple orchard, containing 200 or more trees, all grafted. He has 180 acres of cultivated land, and is one of Herald's Prairie's best farmers.
