Page 130: The People vs. John RICE: For Gaming - Now on this day came the People by Marshall, State Attorney & the said defendant in his proper person, & the said defendant for plea says, he is not guilty in manner & form as, in the Indictment, is alleged against him & for trial puts himself upon the County & the State Attorney doth the like, whereupon let a Jury be called, & thereupon a Jury came to wit, Granville JONES, John R. ALLEN, Robert MOORE, John SURSA?, Allen BOND, James MONTGOMERY, Joseph DORRELL, William R. LITTLE, John DOLSON, James BENNETT, Uriah G. WEATHERSPOON, who being elected tried & sworn well & truly to try the issue joined upon their oaths do say we the Jury find the defendant guilty. It is therefore considered by the Court that the said defendant make his fine to the said People, by the payment of Ten Dollars; & that he also he(sic) pay the costs of this prosecution; & that execution may issue theretofore. Page 132: The People of the State of Illinois vs. William CHASE & John RICE: For Gaming - Now on this day came the said People by Marshall, State’s Attorney & the defendant, John RICE by his attorney who filed his plea of not guilty herein, whereupon let a Jury come and therefore came a Jury to wit, James MONTGOMERY, Granville JONES, James SIRCY(?), Jno R. ALLEN, Robert MOORE, William R. LITTLE, James BENNETT, John DOLLSON, Joseph DORRELL, Allen BOND, Samuel CUMMINGS, and Uriah G. WEATHERSPOON, who being elected tried and sworn returned into court the following verdict we of the Jury find the defendant John RICE, guilty. It is therefore considered by the Court, that the said deft John RICE do make his fine to the People of the State of Illinois in the sum of fifteen Dollars and the costs of this prosecution and the said plaintiffs may thereof have execution. Page 133: The People vs. John RICE: Permiting cards to be plaid in his House etc. - Now on this day came the People by Marshall, State’s Attorney and the said deft by JONES his Attorney pleaded not guilty; whereupon let a Jury come, and therefore a Jury came to wit Uriah G. WEATHERSPOON, Joseph DORRELL, Allen BOND, John DOLLSON, James BENNETT, John R. ALLEN, James MONTGOMERY, Robert MOORE, John SURSA, William R. LITTLE, Granville JONES, and Samuel CUMMINS, who being elected tried & sworn well & truly to try the issue joined upon their oaths do say we the Jury find the Deft guilty. It is therefore considered by the Court that the deft do make his fine to the said People by the payment of Ten Dollars, that he pay also the costs of this prosecution and the said plaintiffs may therefore have execution.
