She was born 1846 in Jefferson County, IL, and died February 28, 1887. He married (2) Eliza Jane Pierce August 10, 1887 in Jefferson County, Illinois, daughter of Richard Pierce and Eliza Unknown. Sarah Ellen Bumpus was born April 20, 1865 in Jefferson County, IL, and died May 19, 1943 in Jefferson County, IL. She married George Benjamin Adams December 16, 1880 in Jefferson County, Illinois. He was born February 1861, and died April 24, 1942. Sarah Ellen Bumpus & George Benjamin Adams Burial: Bethel Cemetery, Jefferson County, IL Mrs. Sarah Adams Mrs. Sarah Ellen Adams, widow of George Benjamin Adams, died at her home, 1012 S. 12th street at 4:45 pm yesterday. Her age was 78 years and 29 days. She had been in ill health for six years and was seriously ill for the past t wo weeks. Funeral services will be held at the Second Baptist Church Friday at 2 pm conducted by the Rev. Sam McCoy and the Rev. H.T. Starkey and burial will be in the Bethel Memorial Cemetery.The body will be removed from Hawkins and Pulley Funeral Home at 4:30 pm today to the family home, where it will lie in state. Friends may call at any time up to the funeral hour. Mrs. Adams was born in Jefferson County, April 20, 1865, the daughter of Marion and Louisa (Page) Bumpus. On December 16, 1880, she was united in marriage with George Benjamin Adams, who preceded her in death April 24, 1942. Mrs. Adams was a lifetime citizen of Jefferson County. She had resided in Mt. Vernon for the past 21 years, coming here from Dodds township. A lifetime Christian, she had been a member of the Second Baptist church for the past 20 years. Mrs. Adams was a lover of children and of her home. She is survived by two children, Fern Adams and Will Adams, both of Mt. Vernon; four sisters, Mrs. Laura Estes, Mrs. Della Smith and Mrs. Ollie Milton of Mt. Vernon and Mrs. Murtie Hales of Wichita, Kansas; two brothers, H.A. Bumpus and Alonzo Bumpus, both of Mt. Vernon; five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Two daughters, Mrs. Louisa Hails and Mrs. Carline Wilson, three sons and one brother, Alec preceded her in death. Children of Sarah Bumpus and George Adams are:

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday at Myers Chapel with Rev. Carl Whittington and the Rev. F. L. Trotter officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel Memorial Cemetery. The body will lie in state at Myers Chapel where friends may call after 4:30 pm Tuesday. Mrs. Estes was born Feb. 8, 1877, in Spring Garden township, the daughter of Robert Marion and Louisa (Page) Bumpus. In Spring Garden on Dec. 1, 1895, she was married to John C. Estes, who preceded her in death on Jan. 31, 1944. She was also preceded in death by two sons; Ralph and Harel Estes. Survivors include a son, Roy L. Estes; a daughter, Mrs. Marvin Powers; a sister, Mrs. Ollie Miller, all of Mt. Vernon; seven grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. Thelma Arline Blacklidge & Virgil T. Bailey: Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Jefferson County, IL 11/26/2004 She was born to Ollie G. (Bumpus) and William O. Blacklidge in a log cabin on the farm of her grandfather, Robert Marion Bumpus in Jefferson County on June 9, 1909. The family moved to Mt. Vernon soon after. She attended the new Horace Mann School and graduated there. She married Virgil T. Bailey on Dec. 25, 1935 in Mt. Vernon. He died Oct. 4, 1994. She graduated from Brown Business College and worked for Pollock Lumber Co. and International Shoe Co. for several years as a bookkeeper. She continued to work for the people that bought Pollock Lumber Co. until she retired at age 90. She was also associated with her husband in the operation of Virgil T. Bailey, Inc. Graveside funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Oakwood Cemetery. Those attending this service are asked to go directly to the cemetery on Sunday. Mr. Randy Sells will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home. She is survived by three sons, J. Paul Bailey and wife, Patricia, Mt. Vernon, Daniel G. Bailey and wife, Dennie, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Roger Kent Bailey and friend Melva Haley, Mt. Vernon; two daughters, Beverly VanBebber and husband, Donald, Portland, Ore., Judith Gray and husband, Edmond, New Paltz, N.Y.; grand children Caesar, Roger Keith, Michelle, Jeniffer, Danny, Jr., Terry, Nathan and Anthony, as well as 17 great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, John David Bailey, one granddaughter, Raynelle Hayes, one grandson, Troy Bailey, and one sister, Ruth Harlow. Mrs. Bailey was a member of Central Christian Church and Royal Neighbors.
