Submitted By: Dianna Williams Daniel Chandler - was from South Carolina, where he served in the Ninety-sixth District, February, 1776, under Capt. Jarret Smith, for four months. He again served in May, 1777, with Capt. James Lisle and Col. Jonas Beard, for two months, and one month with Capt. Frederick Lipham. In 1778 and 1779 he served with Capt. James Lisle and Col. John Lisle for over four months. He again served in June, 1780, with Capt. William Smith and Col. John Thomas; was in the battles of Cedar Springs, and Musgrove Mill, and in constant service until the close of the war. He was made Lieutenant under Capt. Jeremiah Williams and Col. John Hammond. He came to Jefferson county, Illinois, where he died. He was pensioned. ("Illinois Revolutionary War Veteran Burials", 1917) |

Submitted By: Dianna Williams Francis Haney - was born in Prince Edward county, Virginia, April 19, 1754. He enlisted in Botetourt county, serving from June, 1776, to December, 1776, under Capt. Daniel Smith. He again served from September, 1778, for seven months with Capt. George Adams, again for three months with Col. Isaac Shelby, and once more for nine months with Capts. George Maxfield, Robert Caldwell, and John Martin. He came to Morgan county, Illinois, but died in Jefferson county. He was pensioned. ("Illinois Revolutionary War Veteran Burials", 1917) |

Submitted By: Dianna Williams William Tong - was born August 9, 1756, near Mt. Vernon, the home of Washington. He served in the Virginia troops and was in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown. He came to Illinois and lived in Mt. Vernon, Jefferson county. It is said that he was one of Washington's body guards. ("Illinois Revolutionary War Veteran Burials", 1917) |

Please read this information submitted by: Marlene Olson. George Roper died 18 Feb 1845. Perhaps some may have referred to him being buried in Jefferson Co, IL but the county line for Marion Co, IL had gone south and taken the north part of the county of Jefferson Co, IL by 1823. I saw George Roper, gravestone. Veterans of Marion Co, Illinois so honored it. He was a patriot of the American Revolution under Gen. Gates. A newer stone was there and had fallen; covered by periwinkle weeds. Newspaper article of these men looking was in newspaper, I believe, Marion County. Possible 1975. Matthew Roper, son of David and Elizabeth, b. 22 July 1820 - 26 July 1829 age 9 years 4 days. The vine that grew on earth has gone to bloom in heaven. This is a child, who died in Jefferson Co, IL or Marion Co, IL since cemetery was just north of Jefferson Co, IL county line. |
