Ethel N. Allen, 97, of Mt. Vernon, died at 6:32 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at Nature Trail Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.

She was born on Monday, Dec. 2, 1912, in Wayne County, the daughter of Charlie and Hester (Cameron) Patterson.

She married Ray Allen on Dec. 20, 1930, in Jefferson County, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 12, 1959.

Mrs. Allen is survived by her sister, Vivian Herrmann of Mt. Vernon; a niece, Wendy Petersen and husband Michael of Woodlawn; four grandchildren, Richard Allen and wife Rhonda of Woodlawn, Vicki Allen of Dahlgren, Jeffrey Allen of Dix and Kathy Gutzler and husband Rick of Dahlgren; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Allen of Mt. Vernon; a great-nephew, Brendan Petersen of Woodlawn; a great-niece, Morgahn Petersen of Woodlawn; eight great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Marvin Ray Allen; three sisters; and three brothers-in-law.

She worked as a stitcher at the International Shoe Company in Mt. Vernon before retiring.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Belle Rive Cemetery in Belle Rive with the Rev. Brad Henson officiating.There will be no visitation.
