William Woodrow ALLEN, age 91, of Mount Vernon, IL. passed away at 10:35 a.m., Thursday, March 13, 2008 at his residence in Mount Vernon, IL.

He was born January 4, 1917 in Wickliffe, KY to William Allen and Bea Etta (HOLDER) ALLEN.

He married Clara Marie (SUMMERS) ALLEN on October 16, 1937 in Mount Vernon, IL. and she preceded him in death on March 18, 1986.

William worked at Autolite Factory and Mount Vernon Canteen Co. in Mount Vernon, IL. William loved fishing, hunting, trapping and the outdoors. He was also a huge fan of baseball and boxing. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

William is survived by two daughters: Georgetta "Stormy" STEDMAN and husband Cliff of Mount Vernon, IL, Glenda CATES CLARK and husband Charles of Mount Vernon, IL; one son: John "Bill" William Allen and wife Judy of Phoenix, AZ.; five grandchildren: Shannon Robertson of Paducah, KY, Nicole ARMENT and husband Justin of Chesterfield, MO, Elizabeth PERSINGER and husband George of Omaha, IL, Toni HOUSEWORTH and husband Rick of Belle Rive, IL, John Stewart ALLEN and wife Julie of Springerville, AZ; eight great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; one brother: Bruce ALLEN of Orient, IL; two special friends: Gary BADGETT and Richard HOPPER; one niece and several nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers and three sisters and his beloved son-in-law Bob CATES.

Funeral Service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2008 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, IL with Reverend Dwight JONES and Reverend Steve EDWARDS officiating. Full Military Honors will be conducted at the cemetery.

Interment will be in the Denning Cemetery in West Frankfort, IL. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, IL. For those who wish, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mount Vernon, IL 62864.
