Paul D. Bailey

Paul D. Bailey, 89, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 7:35 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at White Oak Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.

He was born in Humboldt on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 1919, a son of Edward I. and Addie M. (Redfern) Bailey.

He married Lela Mae Beard on June 7, 1954, in Mt. Vernon, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 4, 2004.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kirk Cemetery in Ina; the Rev. David Shores will officiate. Members of the Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct full military honors at the cemetery. Interment will follow. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Paul is survived by two sons, Bill Bailey and wife Evelyn of Keenes and Larry Bailey of Aurora; two daughters, Carolyn Bassett and husband Rex of Arkansas and Linda Wood of Florida; a stepson, Roy Loss and wife Sue of Mt. Vernon; nine grandchildren, two step granddaughters; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents, his wife, three brothers and two granddaughters preceded him in death.

Paul fought in the South Pacific with the United States Army during World War II, worked at Vernois Stove Foundry in Mt. Vernon, had a hauling business, was a member of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 and was of the Baptist faith.
