Genevieve Bakel
Genevieve Bakel, 90, of Mt. Vernon died 5:30 p.m. March 4, 2005, at Fieser Nursing Home in Fenton, Mo. She was a retired seamstress from Glassmans Department Store and also did alterations privately. Mrs. Bakel was born Oct. 14, 1914, in Franklin County to Wilford A. and Laura (Harter) Sherwood. She first married Cletus Ripplinger April 23, 1947; he died in June of 1952. She then married Roy J. Bakel Oct. 5, 1963, in Mt. Vernon; he died April 25, 2001. Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. Von Deeke will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. Mrs. Bakel is survived by two sons, David Ripplinger and wife Carol of Elk River, Minn., and Dan Ripplinger and wife Sara Sue "Suzi" of High Ridge, Mo.; two grandsons, Ethan Ripplinger of Elk River, Minn., and Michael Lewis and wife Eunice of Cathedral City, Calif; and a great-granddaughter, Ambry Lewis. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands and three brothers. Mrs. Bakel was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Ladies Sodality at St. Mary's Church and the American Quilter's Society. She taught quilting at Rend Lake.
