Carl Thomas Baker
Carl T. Baker, 66, of Mt. Vernon, died 1:45 am, Dec 29,1995, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Mr. Baker was employed by Illinois Central Railroad for 17 years and then was employed by Mt Vernon City Schools for 32 years, the last 21 years serving as principal of Lincoln Elementary Grade School. He was born April 20, 1929, in Metropolis, a son of Floyd and Burnie (Oliver) Baker. He married Lenora A. Rogers on June 19, 1960, who survives. In addition to his wife, Mr.Baker is survived by three daughters, Cindy Baker of Indianapolis, Karla Salisbury and husband James of Indianapolis, and Stephanie Johnson and husband Jeff of Bonnie. Three grandchildren Brian and Blake Salisbury of Indianapolis and Chelsea Johnson of Bonnie. Brother Truman (Doodle) Baker of Bluford; mother-in-law Luvera Rogers of Bonnie; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Baker served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict Oct 13, 1950 to Aug 28, 1954. He received his maters degree in education from Southern Illinois University. He was a member of Jefferson County Board from 1974 to 1978 and from 1989 until the time of his death. He was also a member of Central Christian Church, Mt Vernon Economic Development Committee, Jefferson County Board and Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association. Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Willard, Gene and Kenneth, sister Aline Talbert and father-in-law Geno R. Rogers. Services at Hughey Funeral Home with Mr. J Howard Kraps officiating and interment at Memorial Gardens at Woodlawn.
