Clyde W. Baker
Clyde W. Baker, 81, of Mt. Vernon went home to be with God 8:41 p.m. March 29, 2006, at Casey Care Center in Mt. Vernon. He was retired as a self-employed painter, carpenter and home repairman. Mr. Baker was born Oct. 22, 1924, in Pulaski County to Chester and Addie (Lorry) Baker. He married Margaret M. (Goffinet) 59 years ago on May 7, 1946, in Mt. Vernon; she survives. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon, with burial to follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. A flag presentation service will be conducted by the chaplain of American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon. The Rev. Daniel Jurek will officiate. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, with a Rosary to be held 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening. Mr. Baker is survived by his wife, Margaret M. Baker of Mt. Vernon; four daughters, Linda Duncan and husband Richard of Bluford, Joyce Sprehe of Mt. Vernon, Kathlene Staley of Mt. Vernon and Carol Ann Sykes and husband Joe of Sophia, N.C.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, James Baker and wife Onute of Sonoma, Calif.; a sister, Marie Dean and husband Robert of O'Fallon, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters; an infant brother; a grandson, Jason Baker; a nephew; and two nieces. Mr. Baker was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, American Legion Post 141 and Mt. Vernon Gun and Sportsman Club. He was also a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a devoted Christian man. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was an avid sportsman. For those who wish, memorials may be made to St. Mary's School in Mt. Vernon and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
