Vinnie Piercy Bates Dies At Age of 88 Years

Mrs. Vinnie (Piercy) Bates of 305 south Ninth street, died at 7:20 a.m. today at Good Samaritan hospital. She was 88 years, seven months, and 23 days old.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Myers Chapel with the Rev. Dale Harmon officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Mt. Vernon, Il.

The body will lie in state at Myers Chapel where friends may call after 3 p.m. Sunday.

Mrs. Bates was born June 19th, 1871, in Jefferson county, the daughter of John Bond Piercy and Jane (McFatridge) Piercy.

Survivors include a daughter, Katherine Akans; a grandson, J.O. Akans, both of St. Louis; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bates was the youngest of 10 children, all deceased. She was reared and educated in Jefferson county and was at one time a schoolteacher in this county.

At an early age she united with the First Methodist church of Mt. Vernon and remained a devoted member all of her life. She attended church regularly until her health prevented.
