Elma Bowdler
Elma Bowdler, 93, of Mt. Vernon, died at 8:50 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010, at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. She was born on March 3, 1917, in Leatherwood, Ky., the daughter of Boyd Riddle and Minnie (Adkins) Riddle. She married John Henry Bowdler on Oct. 18, 1933, in Cumberland, Ky., and he preceded her in death on May 19, 1968. Elma is survived by a daughter, Betty Ruth Winkler and husband James A. of Bluford; a son, Rich Bowdler and special friend Jeanne Prange of Radom; 26 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Nellie Halcomb of Detroit; a brother, Dave Riddle of Lincoln Park, Mich.; five daughters-in-law, Carol Bowdler of Mt. Vernon, Karen Bowdler of Mt. Vernon, Germaine Bowdler of Texico, Sylvia Shehorn of Mt. Vernon and Dorothy Weller of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four sons, Jimmie, Sydney, Kenneth and Jerry Bowdler; a brother, Creed Riddle; an infant brother, Willie Babe Riddle; and sisters, Thelma Caudel, Hazel Brown, Bonnie Newcomb and Nola Shedderly. Elma was a member of Park Avenue Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon where she loved attending and reading her Bible. She enjoyed working outside and family reunions. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hughey Funeral Home with the Rev. Chuck Ellis officiating. Interment will be in Hopewell Cemetery in Jefferson County. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at Hughey Funeral Home. For those who wish, memorials may be given to Park Avenue Baptist Church or Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt.
