Amanda Jane (Puckett) Bumpus
Amanda Jane BUMPUS Daughter of George H. and Julia Ann Puckett born in Jefferson county Feb. 22, 1855, died May 1st, 1926. She was married to Richard Bumpus Jan.11, 1874. To which union eight children were born. Three precededed (sic) her in death: those surviving are Mrs. Rose Atchison, Geo. and Robert Bumpus, Mrs Jslia (sic) Pilson, Mrs. Cora Goddard, and one step daughter, Mrs. Johanna Wissenhunt. She also opened her home to Mr. Pierce Phillips a nephew, who remained with them until manhood. Her husband died July 11, 1895 leaving to her the burden of rearing a family which she so nobly accomplished. In early girlhood she professed faith in Christ, united with the Hams Grove Baptist Church in Nov. 1873, where she lived a devoted christian, always loyal to her church and pastor. For several years she made her home with her children who rise up to call her blessed. She also leaves to mourn her going, a sister Mrs. Lois Vaughn, three brothers, William, Henry and Stephen Puckett, 24 grand children, 13 great grand children and other relatives and friends. Truly a noble woman has fallen. Goodbye Aunt Manda till we meet again. One of the largest congregations that every assembled at Hams Grove church paid their respects to her memory by their presence Sunday afternoon May 2, at 2:30. Funeral conducted by Elder Cyrus Maulding of Mt. Vernon Ill.
