Marie Philp Carson Of Waltonville dies

Mrs. Marie Philp Carson of Waltonville, descendant of a pioneer county family who was State Historian of the Illinois Daughters of the American Revolution, died Tuesday afternoon at Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. She was 70 years, six months and 12 days of age.

For several years Mrs. Carson was a teacher in the schools of Jefferson county. During a busy lifetime Mrs. Carson was a loyal worker in community betterment and church and social activities.

Active in the D.A.R. for many years, she was given a high honor in 1949 when she was elected State D.A.R. Historian, at the state annual meeting in Chicago. Over the years she served Joel Pace Chapter, D.A.R., as Regent and Historian. She also acted as Seventh Division Director and served as State Chairman of Conservation and Red Cross Committee. Along with her D.A.R. work, Mrs. Carson was an active member of the Mt. Vernon Garden Club, the Round Table Study Club, the Federated Woman's Club, and the Southern Illinois Historical Society.

She was an active member of the Waltonville Methodist church and the Women's Society of the church. She was a member of the Colonial Dames of America, the Society of Daughters of Colonial Dames, the Society of Daughters of Colonial Wars, the Colonial Daughters of the Seventeenth Century, and the Patriots and Founders of America.

Mrs. Carson was born July 9, 1896, in Jefferson county, the daughter of Walter and Linnie (Gilbert) Philp.

On August 18, 1920, she was married to John P. Carson, who survives.

She was a graduate of Mt. Vernon Township high school and Southern Illinois University.

Besides her husband, she is survived by an aunt, Mrs. Curtis Williams of Mt. Vernon, and four nieces and nephews, Gene Philp, Mrs. Elizabeth Prior, Mary Susan Philp and James Philp.

Funeral services for Mrs. Marie Philp Carson, of Waltonville, will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Waltonville Methodist church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Bobby Logan will officiate and burial will be in Oakwood cemetery. Friends may call after 6:00 p.m. today. At noon Friday the body will be taken to the church, to lie in state until the funeral hour.

Mrs. Carson, 70, was a past State Historian of the Illinois Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include her husband, John P. Carson.
