Mrs. Adda (Neal) Chalfant
Mrs. Adda Neal Chalfant 82, was born 10 April 1857 near Old Frankfort, at Crawfords Prairie, Frankfort Township, Franklin County, IL; died at her daughters home near Benton 19 Nov. 1939. She was the last member except one sister of a family of 16 children. Her parents, Moses and Temperance Whitlow Neal, were among the pioneer settlers who came to Illinois from the original Virginia. Her father as pioneer of Franklin County, IL.played an important part in its early history. He served as judge of the county court and was one of the first Primitive Baptist Ministers in the county. He served as chaplain in the Union Army during the Civil War. Adda spent her childhood and girlhood at Crawfords Prairie. On 6 Aug. 1882 she married J.L. Chalfant, Sheller, Illinois. There was born to this union seven children, three of whom preceded her from this life. After her marriage, she later lived north of Sesser on a farm in Jefferson County where her husband was extensively engaged in farming and stock-raising. Because of her advanced age, they moved to Waltonville, Illinois in 1924 where her husband died a year later. About five years ago she came to live with her daughter Mrs. House of Benton.She is survived by three daughters and one son, Mrs. Matt House near Benton, Mrs. Lissa Freeman of Sacramento, Calif; Mrs. Dell Downen of Sesser, Illinois; M.M Chalfant of Hayesville, Ohio and one sister Mrs. Betty Neal Clem of Denver, Colo. Burial will take place at Ward Cemetery in Jefferson County.
