Rush Cockrum

Rush COCKRUM, a highly respected and lifelong resident of Spring Garden Township, died last night at 7 o'clock. Death was due to asthma and complications. Mr. COCKRUM had been in poor health the last two or three years and especially the last year, and his condition had been serious a number of times but he always rallied until his strong constitution was weakened by repeated attacks of illness, and death followed as stated above. Mr. COCKRUM was born in Spring Garden Township and had he lived until February 22, 1921, he would have been 79 years old. All of his life except a short residence in Ina, was spent on his farm in Spring Garden Township. Mr. COCKRUM was twice married. His first wife died about 38 years ago, and some years later he married a second time, and this wife and eight children survive. Mr. COCKRUM was one of the best known men of the south part of Jefferson County, and had many friends in Mt Vernon and elsewhere, all of whom held him in the highest respect. Mr. COCKRUM was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a public spirited man, and was ever ready to promote the enterprises that tended to benefit the community in general, and he was always found on the side of progress. He attended church when his health permitted and was a close Bible student, and few men were better informed on the scriptures than he. The study of the scriptures afforded him much satisfaction. Mr. COCKRUM will be long remembered by the people who knew him, as he was an interesting character, and a kindly, genial man, who was every ready to help others and who held ill will for no one. Mr. COCKRUM is survived by his wife and the following named children: (1) Burrell and (2) David COCKRUM, Atlanta, Ill.; (3) Bud and (4) Frank of West Frankfort; (5) Mrs. Robert DODSON, Menard; (6) Mrs. W. J. COLLINS and (7) Mrs. T. A. DODSON, Mt. Vernon, and Misses (8) Cecil and (9) Vivian COCKRUM at home. Mr. COCKRUM will be burned (sic) at Knowles Cemetery, which adjoins his farm.
