Walter J. Cowger
OBITUARY: The Mt. Vernon Register News published the following on 8 May 1934 which read: Walter J. Cowger died this morning at Mt. Vernon hospital at 2:30 o'clock, where he had been taken recently for treatment. His home is in Dodds Township on rural route 4. Mr. Cowger was born in Jefferson County April 26, 1875, and his entire life was spent in the locality in which he was born. His age at time of death was 59 years and 12 days. He was united in marriage in 1907 with Miss Nora Thompson, who survives. Mr. Cowger was a son of the late Albert Cowger, in his day a highly respected Jefferson county farmer. Mr. Cowger was a member of the Lebanon Baptist church and a devout Christian. He took much interest in the church and its work, and was deeply attached to his home and family, their welfare being ever uppermost in his mind and heart. He was a model citizen, and his influence was ever on the side of right. Mr. Cowger is survived by his widow, and one son, Harry A. of Washington D.C., two daughters, Katherine at home, and Mrs. Dortha Kelley, Mt. Vernon, and his mother, Mrs. Vernon Cowger, Mt. Vernon, and five sisters, Mrs. S.A. Gibson, and Mrs. W.L. Mills, Mt. Vernon; Mrs. C.J. Thompson, Belle Rive, Mrs. W.R. Hutchison, and Mrs. Olin Jones, both of Mt. Vernon. Funeral services will be held at the Lebanon Baptist Church, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by the Rev. Bird Green and burial will follow in Oakwood. The body will remain at the home until the funeral hour."
