Life's long march has ended for Martin Van Buren CROSNOE, a well known veteran of the Civil War and citizen of Mt. Vernon. The aged veteran passed away at his home, 501 S. 10th Street at 12:20 o'clock last night.

Mr. CROSNOE was a native of Jefferson County and for many years lived on a farm in the Salem neighborhood, before removing to the city.

He was a well known veteran of the CIvil War serving honorably in Company E, Sixty-Third Illinois Regiment.

He was 70y1m29d old and had finished the right and kept the faith when death summoned him to rejoin his comrades on the other shore.

Mr. CROSNOE was a prominent member of the Red Men Lodge and that order will have charge of the funeral which will take place at 2:o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the residence, interment at Oakwood.

He leaves a wife and 3 children, Henry and Walter CROSNOE and Mrs. Parker VAUGHN.

The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. till 2 o'clock of the afternoon.

My 2x grandfather Martin VanBuren Crosnoe is noticably missing his parents names. That is because his mother had an affair and was divorced from George Newton Crosnoe who everyone has as his father. DNA has confirmed finally who I believed was in fact his father. Definite proof and major reason why you need to verify sources. Family lines can take a very odd turn quickly when DNA comes into play

Apparently had an affair during the 16 months before Martin was born - after her divorce from George. DNA has confirmed finally who I believed was in fact his father. Well the story behind this one is a LONG time ago.... Rootsweb Email List server days.... I was working with a lady who must have checked the census or PPTax lists etc... as I told her the story of my 2x grandfather being born 16 months after his mother's divorce from George Crosnoe.. and on the 1850 census he was listed as Martin Anderson at 8 yrs old. SHE said, there were 3 Anderson males in Jefferson county at that time that were within age range to produce a child and out of the 3 the most likely candidate was Lt. Gov. Stinson Anderson. THEN she asked who was Reuben Crosnoe.... (he was George's brother and the mother's EX brother in law) because Reuben was next door neighbors to Stinson. So I knew then that Stinson had to be the father. I think Rachel, was maybe madly in love or had mental health issues...... but believed Stinson was going to maybe leave his family and run away with her.......... or she was trying to get back at him and gave Martin the last name of Anderson on the census just to be hateful to Stinson or get him in trouble to where his wife would leave him. Not sure if Martin carried the last name of Anderson all 8 yrs of his life or she just did that for the 1850 census, because by the 1860 census Martin was 18 and going by Crosnoe. So I turned to DNA. My brother did his YDNA which confirmed we were Andersons and not Crosnoe. I invented a fake tree on Ancestry listing Stinson and his parent and included his parents to draw out hints, and DNA matches...... and last year I got ONE, and it was to Stinsons Aunt and one of her descendants. Then about 3 mo later I got a direct match to Stinson, from one of his boys. Sometimes gut feelings pay off.

George Crosnoe remarried after he and Rachel divorced..... to Anne Brashears and they had a boy also born in 1842, named George. I've seen people make George and Martin TWINS...... or Anne Martin's mother.... its unbelievable. I'm also hoping to find a DNA match to his brother Thomas Jefferson Crosnoe because he too was born out of wedlock....... as he was listed on the 1850 census as well being born 1849 but HE was listed as a Crosnoe.
