VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR DIES AT INA

"UNCLE JACK" DAVENPORT WILL BR BURIED TUESDAY AFTERNOON - WAS HIGHLY RESPECTED CITIZEN OF JEFFERSON COUNTY

"Uncle Jack" Davenport of Ina died yesterday morning at 11:50 at the family home in that plece. Death followed a long period of ill health, and his last sickness being Thanksgiving day, since which he has been confined to his bed.

Mr Davenport lived in Belle Rive some years, going from Belle Rive to Spring Garden where he operated a Blacksmith shop in the days of the horse, now passed. Some years ago he retired from active life and left Spring Garden, locating in Ina where the remainder of his life was spent.

"Uncle Jack" as he was known to everybodt in the south part of Jefferson County, was a veteran of the Civil War, and one of the most highly respected citizens of the county. He was devoutly religious and in the days of his active life took great interest in the church and church work. He was a member of the Ina M E Church. He was a model citizen, a good neighbor and his influence was always exerted on the side of right.

He had lived very quietly for some years because of the infirmities of age, and ill health he manifested many symptoms of cancer of the stomach and it is believed death was due to that malady. His death was peaceful, and his final sickness of short duration. He would have been 88 years old had he lived until sometime in January 1929.

Mr Davenport always took great interest in governmental affairs and believed it the duty of every citizen always to vote, but was unable to vote in November, the condition of his health being such he could not visit the polls. It is stated that this was the first important electionin which he failed to deposit his ballot.

Mr Davenport was twice married, his first wife dying many years ago.

The sceond wife survives as due children born to both unions.

The children of his first marriage surviving are Tom and Rufus Davenport, merchants of Spring Garden, and Mrs Millie Fitts, and the surviving children of the second union are Mrs Jim Weatherford, Mt Vernon, Mrs Lora Stringfield, Ina, Mrs Sam Hicks, Ina, Mrs Pearl -------, St Louis, Mo, and Mrs Charles Leonard, Benton.

Funeral services will be held in Ina M E Church tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm.
