Melcher C. Davis
Melcher C. Davis, 87, Route 3, died 9:30 a.m. May 20, 1990, at his home. Mr. Davis was a farmer, livestock producer and cattle trader until retirement. He was born Nov. 18, 1902, in Jefferson County, a son of Clinton C. and Melissa (Bullock) Davis. May 7, 1949, in Mayfield, Ky., he married Edna Bender, who died June 5, 1963. In February, 1966, he married Nellie Irene Garrett Yearwood, who died Aug 12, 1985. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Auxier officiating. Burial will follow in Wolfe Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Davis is survived by one son, Jack Davis, former U.S. congressman, and wife Virginia of Springfield; four stepsons, Russell Bender of El Paso, Texas, Charles "Sonny" Yearwood of Mt. Vernon, Darrell Yearwood of Wood River, and Lee Yearwood of Houston; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Mary Ellen Capps of Mt. Vernon; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; and two nieces, Mrs. Don (Nancy) Schutte of Woodlawn and Mrs. Wilbur (Dorothy) Jones of Mt. Vernon. Mr. Davis was a christian. He was a member of Illinois Farm Bureau, of Woodlawn Odd Fellows Lodge and of the governing board of Jefferson County Rural Fire Department for many years. He was awarded a distinguished service award when he retired from the board. In addition to both wives, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Billy and Lee Davis; and two sisters, Jennie Corder and Nannie Brown. Memorials may be made to Wolfe Prairie Cemetery and will accepted at the funeral home at any time.
