Harry P. Dodds
The Mt. Vernon Register News published the following on Thursday, July 31, 1958 which read: Harry P. Dodds, 62, a clerk at the Mt. Vernon post office for almost 42 years, died at 8:00 o'clock last night at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Mr. Dodds was retiring from the postal service after a long career of faithful service which began in September of 1916. He resided at 115 north 12th street. He had submitted to an operation on Monday of this week at the Rochester Hospital, friends said today. The body will be returned to Mt. Vernon and funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Myers Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dale Harmon. The body will lie in state at Myers Chapel, where friends may call at any time after 5:00 p.m. Friday. It was only recently that Mr. Dodds announced his retirement. He received a personal letter from Arthur E. Summerfield, Postmaster General, commending him for 41 years of loyal service in the post office department. Mr. Dodds was the son of W. N. and Emma (Philp) Dodds. During his high school days he was a member of the Mt. Vernon varsity basketball team. He was married to Pearl Rainey, who survives. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Thomas of Chicago and Donald, who is on the sports publicity staff of the University of Illinois at Champaign; 2 grandchildren and a brother, John of Denver, Colorado.
