Pearl (Rainey) Dodds
OBITUARY: The Mt. Vernon Register News published the following on Wednesday, July 5, 1995 which read: Pearl Rainey Dodds, 98, of Mt. Vernon ied 6:13 a.m. July 3, 1995, in Carle Hospital in Urbana. She taught at science at Mt. Vernon Township High School for several years and when there was a teachers shortage during World War II she returned to teach at Casey Junior High School. She was born November 23, 1896 in Welge, in Randolph County, near Chester, a daughter of John L. and Elizabeth (Scheller) Rainey. In 1923, she married Harry P. Dodds, a Mt. Vernon native, who preceded her in death in 1958. Graveside services for the burial of the cremated remains will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Alan Rhein officiating. No visitation will be held.Those attending the graveside services are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Hughey Funeral Home is in charge of services. Mrs. Dodds attended both grade school and high school in Mt. Vernon, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Northwestern University. Since the subject she taught, general science, was required, it meant that virtually everyone who went through the school system in the 40s and 50s had her as a teacher. She was a member of several clubs, and was the last surviving charter member of the Mt. Vernon Panhellenic Club. Mrs. Dodds is survived by two sons, Thomas P. and wife Romaine of Des Plaines and Donald R. and wife Ellie of Champaign; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Dodds of Chicago, Jane Guerin of New York City, Dinao Mitchell of Mentor, Ohio, and Alan Dodds of Champaign; and three great-grandchilden. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, and two brothers."
