Gary R. Elliott
Gary R. Elliott, 58, Mt. Vernon, died 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. He was born in Mt. Vernon on July 9, 1949, the son of the late Carl Elliott and Alma (Berg) Smith. His mother survives. He married Kim Elliott in Mt. Vernon. He graduated from SIU-Carbondale with a degree in accounting, and was an auditor for Blue Cross. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Johnson Funeral Home in Fairfield. Interment will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Fairfield. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Gary is survived by his mother, Alma; wife, Kim Elliott of Mt. Vernon; son, Carl Elliott and special friend Rindy Phillips of St. Peters, Mo.; daughters, Lyna Benson and husband John and their two children Seth and Ali of Mt. Vernon; Jackie Kroeschen and husband Rob of Mt. Vernon; step-daughter Be Nga Nguyen and husband Phoung and children Julie and Danny of Salem, Mass.; sisters Brenda Weedman of Fairfield; and brother Michael Elliott of Fairfield. He was preceded in death by his father. Gary was in the Army and served in the Vietnam War where he met his wife. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, and supported the Republican Party. He was also an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt and go camping. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
