Death of Mrs. Gibson

On Saturday morning last Mrs. Samuel Gibson was stricken with paralysis and late the same evening, without haying recovered a moment of consciousness, was ushered into eternity. She was apparently in her usual good health during the early hours of Saturday morning and was engaged in milking the cow while her husband was feeding the stock, when suddenly she complained of feeling badly and Mr. Gibson advised her to return to the house. She expressed doubt of her ability to get to the house and Mr. Gibson undertook to assist her. For a few steps they got along all right, but about midway from barn to house she began to reel, and being a large, heavy woman; Mr. Gibson was unable to hold her and she fell over. The daughter, Miss Ellen, was called and with her assistance Mrs. Gibson, now unconscious, was gotten, into the house. Dr. Plummer, family physician, was called, and an examination of her condition soon convinced him that the chances for her recovery were very remote, although it was thought she might linger for several days. In this unconscious condition she laid moaning most of the day, and at 9 o'clock in the evening, with her temperature at 109, she passed away without having uttered a word or recognizing a soul about her bedside.

The children, most of whom were away from home, had been telegraphed during Saturday, but failed to reach here until after her death.

Angeline Newby was the daughter of Hezekiah and Nancy Newby, old settlers and highly respected citizens of this community in its earlier days.

She was born July 10,1835. and was united in marriage with Samuel Gibson at the residence of her parents, which was located where Capt. John Gibson now resident in the southern part of this city, November 30, 1851.

From this union ten children were born, all of whom still survive save John E. They are Augustus, who now lives at McLeansboro; Mary Ida Palmer, of this city; Dr. Oscar N., of Eldorado; Thomas O., who resides on the old home farm in Dodds township; Adelia and Nancy Ellen, who reside at home; Walter, who was away at school William E., who now lives in Henry county, Mo., near Clinton, and Samuel A.

A few years after their marriage both Mr. and Mrs. Gibson made a profession faith in Christ and united with the Old School Presbyterian church at the old Odd Fellows' hall in this city, of which communion both remained consistent, faithful members until the early part of the present year, Mr. Gibson serving for many years as ruling elder in the church.

Upon the organization of the Cumberland church in this city Mr. and Mrs. Gibson decided to place their membership with the new organization and none have been more active in church work than this respected couple. Only a few days ago Mrs. Gibson, at the regular meeting of the Pastor's Aid Society, in which, in common with all other departments of church work, she manifested a deep and abiding interest, told the ladies that they must not expect her to attend regularly owing to the feeble physical condition of her eldest daughter, Mrs. Mary I Palmer, but that she would always be present when it was possible for her to do so without neglecting those to whom it was her duty to minister.

She was a woman who lived in her everyday life the religion she professed and who honored her Master by her fidelity and consecration to His cause.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist church, Rev. H. Clay Yates, her pastor, officiating, at 10:30 o'clock this forenoon, the Methodist brethren having kindly consented to the request of this respect owing to the fact that as yet tie Cumberland church is without a permanent home of its own. The Daughters of Rebekah, of which deceased was a charter member, also participated in the funeral ceremonies and attended in a body.

The remains were followed to Oakwood cemetery by a large number of sorrowful relatives and friends, where they were quietly laid to await the final resurrection. This is the first visit of the death angel to the new congregation.
