Mary Littleton Gray

Mary LITTLETON was born in North Carolina, May 9, 1828. Died at her home in McClellan Twp., June 22, 1923, age 95y1m13d.

On June 13, 1845, she was united in marriage with David S. GRAY who departed this life November 3, 1916 (this is not clear) at the age of 90 years. Shortly after their marriage they removed to Sumner County, Tenn., where they resided until 1860 or 1861, when they came to Union County, Illinois. They later came to Jefferson County and were residents of McClellan Township about __ years, most of this time at the present homestead.

Mrs. GRAY was the mother of 12 children, ten of whom grew to manhood and womanhood. The oldest Mrs.Mary E. MILLINER died January 1919 and John J. the second son, some years previous. Those surviving are Mrs. Sarah HAYS, Mrs. Nancy DAVIS, Miss Jennie and Thomas M. of McClellan, Mrs. Martha CARTER, Oklahoma, Mrs. Drucilla HODGE, Danville, Ill., Mrs. Lon NEWBY and Robert L. of Mt. Vernon, Ill. She also leaves 29 grandchldren and 40 great grandchildren, her living descendants numbering 82.

Mrs. GRAY lived an examplary Christian life, having been a member of the Baptist Church many years. She was a woman, who if she had an enemy, never knew it and a favorite maxim of hers, and one which she often repeated to her children was, "if you cannot say any good of a person, don't say anything." Deceit was no part of her.

Even at her advanced age she desired to live and often expressed regret at having to leave her daughter, Miss Jennie, who for years had ministered to her every want.

Besides her family, she leaves many friends who mourn her departure. Of her life it can truly be said that she so lived that when her summons came, she could lie down as one who wraps the drapery couch about him and lie down to pleasant dreams.
