Elvis Green
Elvis Green, 89, of Waltonville, died at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon. He was born on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 1919, in Waltonville, son of Harry and Lucy (Crawford) Green. He married Frances Marie George on June 25,1941, in Perryville, Mo., and she preceded him in death on Feb. 15, 1992. Mr. Green is survived by a son, Harry Green and special friend Debbie Rubenacker of Waltonville; two daughters, Connie Sue Pritchard and husband Laurence of DeMotte, Ind., and Harriet Rathe and husband Robert of Waltonville; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two grandchildren and 12 siblings. Elvis was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He started Traveling Tent Movies until the outbreak of World War II, when he served valiantly in the Navy, the Air Force and the Army during the war and was awarded a Bronze Star. He was a coal miner until retiring in 1970 and was a member of the coal miner's union. He enjoyed horticulture and pursued his many passions and dreams. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Ron Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Knob Prairie Cemetery in Waltonville. Members of the Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct full military honors at the cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.
