WELL KNOWN FARMER DIED LAST EVENING

John H. HARLOW had been a resident of this county for seventy years; was son of pioneer settlers. John H. Harlow, an old and highly respected resident of Mt. Vernon Township died at the Egyptian Hospital last evening. His death followed an operation which had been performed in the hope of arresting the disease which was slowly ending his life. He failed to rally from the effects of the operation because of his advanced age. Mr. Harlow was 70 years and 10 months of age having been born in this township at the Bluford Harlow farm near the Salem Baptist Church.

He was the son of Bluford and Emma Harlow who settled in this county in 1818, being one of the first families to move into what is now Mt. Vernon Township.

Mr. Harlow had spent practically all of his life in this county with the exception of a short time when he lived in Texas.

He had been a farmer all of his life and was accounted a most successful and progressive farmer. Up until a few years ago he was a strong and active man but he had been afflicted with kidney trouble for some time.

Mr. Harlow had a wide circle of friends among the older residents of this township and was highly regarded by all who knew him.

He had been a member of the Baptist Church for many years, acting as deacon of the Salem Baptist Church in late years.

Mr. Harlow was a Democrat all of his life and took an active interest in politics. He was at one time supervisor of roads in this township.

Mr. Harlow is survived by four brothers: Noah H. Harlow, now living at Benton; S. A. Harlow, Mt. Vernon; J. O. Harlow of Mt. Vernon and J. J. Harlow of Zion City, Ill. He also leaves three sisters: Mrs. Mary E. SHELTON of Zion City; Mrs. Martha C. VANNATTA living near Divide and Mrs. Sarah E. KNAPP of Mt. Vernon. He also leaves a wife and a son, W. E. Harlow, a well known farmer living north of the city, and a daughter, Mrs. Ada BROOKMAN of Mt. Vernon Township.

The funeral services will be conducted at the Salem Baptist Church at two o'clock tomorrow afternoon.

John H. HARLOW, son of Bluford and Emma Harlow, was born in Jefferson County, Ill. Dec. 19, 1843. Departed this life in Mt. Vernon, Ill., Oct. 23, 1914.

He was married to Mary E. TUCKER, of Smith county, Tenn., Dec. 25, 1864, who died July 22, 1878 in Lamar county, Texas.

To this union was born five children, Emma J. and Mattie Florence, who died in infancy; Nora Ellen, wife of John BAWDEN, who died Nov. 26, 1907; Ada Catherine BROOKMAN and Wm. Edward, who still survive.

He married Nancy E. BRIDGES Jan. 25, 1883, who died Dec. 12, 1905, after which he was married to Serena Caroline BRUCE on March 11, 1909, whom he leaves, a good and devoted wife, to mourn her loss.

He was converted and joined Salem Baptist Church about forty-five years ago and has lived a faithful and consecrated Christian life to the end. We can truly say that he was a good man; his delight was the law of the Lord; the world was made better by his having lived and by his Godly example. It was his delight to help some one and he was never too tired or weary to help someone in need. While we weep, we weep not as those who have no hope. We feel that our loss is his great gain. He has been faithful until death and we can truly say: "Asleep In Jesus, Blessed sleep, from which none ever wake to weep." He has had many trials and many times been so weary, but now is resting: God has wiped away his tears and all pain is o'er. "He is safe in Jesus, safe on his loving breast, sweetly his soul is at rest."
