Otis G. "Gabby" Harrison
Otis G. "Gabby" Harrison, 81, of Mt. Vernon died 2:45 a.m. Sept. 7, 2004 at his home. He retired from E.F. Wielt Co. after 40 years of employment as an electrician. Mr. Harrison was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Weaver to Charles and Maggie (Jones) Harrison. He married LaVerna L. (Tisch) Harrison Feb. 16, 1946, in Johnston City; she survives. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. today at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. The Rev. Merle Fullerton will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Mr. Harrison is survived by his wife, LaVerna Harrison of Mt. Vernon; a son, Donald Harrison and wife Florie of Oaklawn; a daughter, Melissa Winn and husband Tom of Buckner; brothers George Harrison of Johnson City, Tenn., and Claude Harrison of Tacoma, Wash.; sisters Lillian Rains of Aurora and Nancy Traub of Elgin; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and three sisters. Mr. Harrison was of the Baptist faith. After his retirement, he enjoyed a hobby of woodworking. When he was 16 years old, he joined the CCC Camp at Giant City before joining the army. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1945. For those who wish, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
