Joanna (Smith) Harvill

Joanna HARVILL died at the residence of her son, Anderson, in Spring Garden township on Tuesday February 2 at 9a.m. Mrs. Joanna Harvill, aged 77y3m12d.

She was the daughter of Isaac M. and Milly SMITH, who were among the early pioneers of the county, having settled in Moore's Prairie in 1831.

Her brothers and sisters were: Sylvanus, Anderson, Jesse H. and John, Mrs. Asa OVERBY and Mrs. Joshua HOPPER.

Deceased was born in Hickman County, Tennessee, October 10, 1808, and was there married to John HARVILL, February 23, 1826.

Three years later, in 1829, Mr. HARVILL moved to Illinois and settled in Coles County, near the present site of Charleston. But Mr. SMITH having moved out and located in Jefferson, Mr. HARVILL came down the next year, 1832, and located in the neighborhood where he and his wife have lived and died. He died October 29, 1882, leaving three children, John since deceased, Anderson, with whom Mrs. HARVILL thereafter made her home, and Mrs. Nancy BOOK.

Besides these, their descendants include 30 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, most of them living in the southeast part of the county.

She was converted and joined the Baptist Church in 1852, and for nearly 35 years has been an exemplary member of that communion. She was a faithful attendant at public worship until a year and a half ago, since which time and the afflictions age brings, have confined her to her room. Indeed she was so helpless and racked with pain that she could be moved only by means of a rolling chair. But, though her sufferings were intense and long continued, she bore all with remarkable patience and fortitude, looking forward with somethng of ardent desire to the time of her release here and reunion with the loved ones gone before.
