Iona L. Hayes, 93, 122 N. 10th St., died at 10 a.m. Oct. 22, 1986, at her residence.

Mrs. Hayes was born Sept. 2, 1893, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Lafayette and Nebraska (Wells) Phelps.

On Sept. 24, 1910, in Jefferson County, the(sic) married Arlie Hayes, who preceded her in death April 3, 1966.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Johnston Funeral Home with the Rev. Clifford Hicks officiating. Burial will follow in South Hickory Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hayes is survived by five sons, Glen Hayes and wife Lena of Yuba City, Calif., Russell Hayes and wife Wahneeta of Macomb, Lester Hayes and wife Celia of Decatur, Edward Hayes and wife Wilma of Mt. Vernon and Ron Hayes and wife Carol of Dundee, Fla.; three daughters, Mrs. John (Maxine) Shores, Mrs. Wilma Upton and Joyce Balsover, all of Mt. Vernon; 26 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hayes was a Protestant.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son-in-law, Marvin Upton, two sons, three grandchildren and several brothers and sisters.
