Sam Hayes
Sam Hayes, 68, of Route 7, Mt. Vernon, died at 5:45 pm Sunday at his home. He was a retired farmer and livestock dealer. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm. Wednesday at Zion United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Jolly of Grand Junction, Col., and the Rev. John Capps of Mt. Vernon officiating. Burial will be in the Hopewell Cemetery.Friends may call after 6 pm Tuesday at the Osborn Funeral Home at Dix. Mr. Hayes was born Dec. 31, 1907, at Doniphan, Mo, the son of James C. and Hannah W. (Jarrett) Hayes. He married July 3, 1931 at Terre Haute, Ind., to Dixie Harnage. She survives. Mr. Hayes was a member of the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dixie Hayes; a son, Jerry L. Arnold of Mt. Vernon; two daughters, Mrs. Dixie E. Geyer of San Diego, Cal., and Mrs. Peggy Sue Olson of Branford, Conn., eight grandchildren, four brothers, Steve Hayes, Ray Hayes, and John Hayes, all of Mt. Vernon, and Clifford Hayes of Richmound, Mich., and two sisters, Mrs. Stella Jolly of Grand Junction, Col.,and Mrs. Clara Manly of Henson, Texas. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Hayes, and by two sisters, Nora McPheeters and Tina McGhee.
