Sidney Hirons Of Decatur Died At Age 70 Sidney S. Hirons, 70, Decatur, a former well-known Jefferson County resident, died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Decatur Memorial Hospital. Mr. Hirons served as Jefferson County superintendent of schools for 16 years and was a former superintendent of Waltonville School Unit 1. He was employed in the Office of Public Instruction in Springfield for eight years. He was born in Jefferson County in 1914, the son of William Hughs and Edith (Shurtz) Hirons. On Sept. 23, 1970, at Decatur, he married Hazel (Goessman) Hicks, who survives. Mr. Hirons graduated from Southern Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree and from the University of Illinois with a master’s degree. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Fry & Frick Funeral Chapel in Waltonville with the Rev. Carl Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. on Friday until the funeral hour at the funeral chapel. In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, William Sidney Hirons of Mt. Vernon; one stepson, Michael Hicks of Hanover Park, one stepdaughter, Mrs. John (Pat) Lipps of Mt. Vernon, and one grandchild. Mr. Hirons attended the Presbyterian Church in Decatur. He was preceded in death by his parents.
