Elmer F. Hopper
Elmer F. Hopper, 65, Route 6, died at 10:15 Thursday at his home. He was a former employee of Mt. Vernon Car Shops, Sinclair Refinery and Sturdibilt, and for the past several years was employed with Brehm Oil Company. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm Sunday at the Hughey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Morrison Bundy officiating. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 pm Saturday. Mr. Hopper was born Feb. 16, 1917, in Jefferson County, the son of John C. and Minnie (Pigg) Hopper. On May 8, 1941, in Mt. Vernon, he married Pauline Phillips, who survives. Other survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Wilma Sursa, Mt. Vernon, and Mrs. Alma Wyatt, Ewing; two brothers-in-law, Gene Sursa, Mt. Vernon, and the Rev. Lestel Wyatt, Ewing; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters. Mr. Hopper was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the 62nd Coast Artillery, Searchlight Division in England, North Africa, Italy and Sicily. He was a member of the Northside Church of God, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher for many years, and was a board member and organizer of the Rend Lake Evangelistic Association.
