William Joel Howard, 84, of Hickory Grove Manor Nursing Home, died at 10:45 pm yesterday at the nursing home.

He was a retired carpenter.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am Wednesday at Myers chapel, with the Rev. Marvin W. Friesner officiating. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 pm Tuesday.

Mr. Howard was born July 25, 1890, the son of Alonzo and Minnie (Carter) Howard.

He was married to Gertrude Soper, who preceded him in death in April 1971.

Mr. Howard was a member of the Epworth Methodist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Maurice, of Huntley, Charles, Mt. Vernon, and Gerald, Woodstock; three daughters, Mrs. Betty Wilkins, Mt. Vernon, Mrs. Virginia Olin, Valparaiso, Ind., and Mrs. Joan Farthing, St. Petersburg, Fla.; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Mae Avery, St. Louis.
