Charles Kittinger Jr.
Charles Kittinger Jr., 82, of Mt. Vernon left us at 11:25 a.m. April 13, 2005, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor. He was retired from working in the shipping department at General Radiator in Mt. Vernon. Mr. Kittinger was born May 8, 1922, in Saline County to Charles Kittinger Sr. and Fannie (Mayhue) Kittinger. He married Ruby E. (Hensley) Kittinger April 19, 1952, in Jefferson County; she preceded him in death Nov. 10, 1999. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. The Rev. Don Rector will officiate. The chaplain of American Legion Post 141 will conduct the military flag presentation. Those attending the service are asked to go directly to the cemetery on Saturday. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Mr. Kittinger is survived by a son, Paul Edward Byers and wife Linda of Sweetwater, Texas; a daughter, JoAnn Melena of Mt. Vernon; a special friend of Mr. Kittinger and his daughter, Mark Cowan of Mt. Vernon, who helped Ms. Melena care for her father at home prior to his residency at Countryside Manor; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Kittinger and wife Wilma of Eldorado; and several nieces and nephews, including Billy Lynn Kittinger and wife Sally. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a stepson, Billy Joe Byers. Mr. Kittinger was a U.S. Army veteran, who fought in the Philippines and New Guinea from 1942-1945 during World War II. He was a quiet man who led a peaceful life, enjoying fishing and hunting. He loved his family and was proud of them and their ccomplishments. He was also a member of Southside Baptist Church, where he was baptized.
