James R. “Locky” Lockwood, 63, of Woodlawn died Dec. 31, 2004, at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon following a lengthy illness.

He was born April 4, 1941, a son of Leland and Eugenia Lockwood.

He is survived by two sons, Jimmy Lockwood and wife Barbie of Texico and Ty Lockwood and wife Christy of Centralia; three daughters, Lea Ann Lockwood of Mt. Vernon, Leslie Lockwood and friend Amanda Holloway of Mt. Vernon, and Carla Rae and husband David Clontz of Mt. Vernon; five grandsons, J.B., William, T.J. and Braydon Lockwood and Dalton Clontz; two granddaughters, Bethany and Lyndee Lockwood; a great-grandson, Jalen Lockwood; a brother, Morris Ford of Centralia; a half brother, Richard Ragan and wife Margaret of Wayne City; a half sister, Marilyn Coleman of North Carolina; a niece, Rhonda Hixenbaugh and husband Billy and great-nephew Colby Wood of Centralia; and special friends Cindy Vincent, Judy Hester, Wilma Braddy and Belinda Gregory. He is also survived by several cousins in the Mt. Vernon area.

Jim was a Christian and a member of Casey Avenue Baptist Church. He followed the religious teachings of Col. Theme.

He attended Mt. Vernon High School, where he was involved in basketball and baseball. Throughout his life, he was an avid sports fan, having played men’s fast-pitch in the Mt. Vernon area. He once had the opportunity to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals minor league. He was also actively involved as a coach and umpire for men’s and women’s fast- pitch softball. He loved to watch football, basketball, baseball and NASCAR on TV. He also loved to play pool and bowl. One of Jim’s greatest pleasures and accomplishments was teaching area girls the aspects of fast-pitch softball, many of whom went on to receive scholarships due to his leadership and teachings. He was a great influence on many of the local youth due to his fast-pitch coaching. He was loved by all.

At his request, he will be cremated and there will be no services. Johnston Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made in his honor to the Woodlawn or Waltonville girls high school fast-pitch softball team or the Chapman Recreation Complex in Woodlawn and will be received at the funeral home.
