Artemisa (Cargil) McKowen
Artemisa, daughter of John and Mary Cargil, was born on the 17th day of June, 1850 in Hamilton Co., Illinois. Here she grew to young womanhood and on October 13th, 1868 was united in marriage with Sampson McKowen. This union was blessed with four children, one died in infancy. Those living are Anna, now Mrs. Harmon Miller of Danville, Ill., and John and Oscar McKowen of Mt. Vernon. Mr. McKowen died 23 years ago and since then she and her son John have lived together. She had been ailing for several years and for over 2 years had been blind. One week ago Thursday, she took seriously ill and gradually grew worse until Wednesday, Sept. 3rd 1919, in the minutes before 4 o'clock in the afternoon she passed peacefully into rest at her home at 311 North Sixth street, aged 69 years 2 months and 16 days. During her illness she never murmured or complained and said she was ready for the change and that her preparation was all made a number of years ago. She was converted some 25 years ago and lived a quiet modest Christian life. She was a good woman and loved by her neighbors. The funeral was conducted by Rev. J.C. Kinison of West Frankford at Hopewell Church at 11 o'clock on Sept. 5th and the body laid to rest in the cemetery by the side of her husband.
