Morris Edgar Miller

Morris Edgar Miller, who was mayor of Mt. Vernon more than a quarter of a century ago, died at 8:20 this morning at the Setzekorn Nursing Home, where he had been a patient since January 19.

Mr. Miller, who was known by his friends as Edgar, was 94 years, two months and six days of age. His home was at 216 north Eight street.

A retired employee of the wood erect department at the Mt. Vernon car shops. Mr. Miller served his community in many capacities during a long lifetime.

He was mayor of Mt. Vernon from 1933 to 1935. He was a past president of the Mt. Vernon grade school board of education and for several years was superintendent of the Mt. Vernon city park.

Years ago he was tax assessor here.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Myers Chapel. The Rev. Benjamin Anderson will officiate and burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery. Masonic services will be conducted.The body will lie in state at Myers Chapel, where friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Miller was born December 31, 1866 in the Hopewell community of Jefferson county, a son of John Harmon and Nancy E. (Chastain) Miller. He was a lifetime citizen of this county.

On August 9, 1891 he was married to Charlotte Caroline Reynar, who came to Jefferson county with her parents from Toronto, Canada, when she was an infant of nine months.

In August of 1941 Mr. and Mrs. Miller Celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary at their home here. Mrs. Miller died June 19, 1952.

Mr. Miller was a member of the Epworth Methodist Church, the A. F. and A. M. and the B.R.C. of A.

He is survived by one daughter, Lula Emily Miller of Mt. Vernon, one son Dr. Roy G. Miller of Mt. Vernon, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, one son preceded him in death.
