James Philp Newell died at 2:00 a.m. today at his home on RFD 2, Mt. Vernon, at the age of 77 years, five months, and 18 days.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Shiloh Methodist church, of which he was a member, with the Rev. Leroy E. Dude, officiating. Burial will be in New Shiloh cemetery.

The body will lie in state at Myers Chapel where friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Saturday. At noon, Sunday, the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until the funeral hour.

Mr. Newell was born Nov. 6, 1886, in Jefferson county, the son of I. N. and Ida (Philp) Newell, and he spent his entire life in Jefferson county.

On Nov. 26, 1913, in Mt. Vernon, he was married to Vera McPherson, who survives.

He is also survived by four sons, Dean and Orval Newell, both of Mr. Vernon, Maxey Newell of Downers Grove, Ill., and Thomas Newell of Marion, O.; two daughters, Mrs Faye Simpson of Gurnee, Ill., and Mrs. Mary Mills of Bluford; a sister, Mrs. Elsie Hodge of Waltonville; and 17 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Raleigh Newell.

Mr. Newell was a retired farmer.
