Sandra Sue (Shurtz) Nickell
Sandra died peacefully on February 9, 2003, after a courageous and arduous battle against cancer. She was born in Waltonville, Illinois on ebruary 14, 1945. Sandra leaves behind her family that includes her mother, Melba Shurtz, sons Michael Blunt, Robert and Deborah Blunt, and her sister, Kathy Balsley. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Heather and Emilie Blunt, and Brian and Barrett Blunt. She was preceded in death by her father Fred M. Shurtz. Sandra concluded a long and illustrious career by retiring in 2000 from the Department of the Navy where she worked as a Business Operations Analyst for the Federal Civil Service. Her career was highlighted by receiving the Civilian Meritorious Award. Sandra enjoyed traveling, collecting, genealogy and raising her pet dogs. Sandra is loved by her family and friends and enjoyed an extraordinary life. She will be missed dearly by those who knew her. Memorial services will be held Friday, February 14, 2003, at Foothills United Methodist Church, 4031 Avocado Blvd., La Mesa, 91941 at 1:30 p.m. The family requests donations be made in Sandra's name to the American Cancer Society.
