Robert Earl "Bob" Noel

Robert Earl "Bob" Noel, 82, of Mt. Vernon went to be with the Lord at 2 p.m. Jan. 7, 2005 while at Jeffersonian Care Center, Mt. Vernon.

He was born March 10, 1922 in Carbondale to Earl Noel and Clara (Jungers) Noel.

He married Kitty June (Osborne) Noel on Jan. 20. 1946 in Centralia. She died Nov. 21, 1998.

He first managed Goodale Wholesale Company in Mt. Vernon for several years. In 1958, he began his teaching career at Mt. Vernon Township High School land retired from there in 1985. He influenced many students over the years and always enjoyed visiting with them later around town.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hughey Funeral Home with burial to follow in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens. Full military rights will be conducted by American Legion Post #141, Mt. Vernon. Rev. Troy Warner will officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

He is survived by one daughter, Becky Clark and husband, John of Carterville; two grandchildren, Marcie Hubbard and husband, Adam of Cape Girardeau, MO., and Ted Clark of Springfield; one niece, Noel Rich and husband Robert, Peru, South America and by very special friend, Sue Craig of Mt. Vernon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother D. Noel, wife and one sister Frances Crane preceded him in death.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. He was a surveyor for an artillery unit in France, England and Germany and took part in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Noel was a faithful member of First Baptist Church for over 50 years. He served as trustee, deacon and sang bass in the choir. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was an avid golfer (getting his first hole in one at age 80). He was a member of the American Legion and Elks.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon.
