Margaret Anne (Philp) Nowland
Margaret Anne Philp was born in Kentucky, March the 6th, 1829 and departed this life September 14th, 1916 at the age of 87 years, 6 months, and 9 days. She was the twin sister of Mrs. Harriet Haynes, and next to the oldest child of Thomas and Elizabeth Philp, who came from Kentucky and settled in Jefferson County, Illinois about 1840. In 1853 she was united in marriage to Albert J. Weaver. To this union two children were born; Sebern J. Weaver of Mt. Vernon, Ill., and Mrs. Mina Cherry of Scheller, Ill. Her first husband having departed this life in 1857, she was again united in marriage to William Nowland, who survives her. To this union four children were born; Isaac T. Nowland, Mrs. Harriet A. Shurtz, Mrs. Cora Olive Elliston, all of this county, and Henry Arthur Nowland who preceeded her to the home beyond many years ago. She leaves to mourn her departure one step son, Strawder Orsen Nowland, one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth J. Conlee, a loving husband and many other relatives and devoted friends. Up to the time of her death Aunt Margaret, as we loved to call her, retained the full vigor of her mind, and continued that active life to which she was always accustomed. In early life and while under parental care, she was converted under the preaching of Elder William T. Williams of the Disciples of Christ. She united with the Christian Church at the same place with her older sister, Mary Eliza Philp, with whom she is again united forever. Homes on earth may break their ties by death, but beyond this life of sorrow there is another that is as enduring as Eternity. She has left this life to enter the dawn of an eternal day.
Rest comes at last; though life be long and dreary, The funeral service was conducted at the home at ten o'clock last Saturday morning by Elder George F. Murray and burial took place in the Knob Prairie Cemetery north of town. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the aged husband and family in their hour of sorrow.
