Robert D. Payne, 76, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 5:00 pm November 20, 2023 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon.

He was born April 17, 1947 in Mount Vernon to the late Albert and Zulema (Draper) Payne.

Robert married Marcella (Marlow) Payne on December 30, 1972 at Epworth United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon. They were blessed with nearly 51 years of marriage.

In addition to his beloved wife, Robert is survived by his children, Robert Allen Payne of Bluford, Illinois, Justin Payne, and wife, Kortny of Mount Vernon, Jessica Case and husband, Jerry of Bluford, Jeremy Payne of Mount Vernon, and Jared Payne of Bluford; grandchildren, Dustin Payne, Tristan Payne, Cruz Case, Sloane Case, Stacie Bullard, Maggie Payne, Lynzie Payne, and Jaxon Payne; brother, Connie Payne and wife, Barbara of Mount Vernon; sister, Karen Lappin of Wayne City, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by siblings, Nolan Payne and Alberta Murch; and brothers-in-law, Rod Murch and Don Lappin.

Robert worked for the Illinois Central Railroad as an engineer for 37 years. He attended Epworth United Methodist Church. Robert loved his canine companion, Daisy. He also enjoyed farming, mowing, and riding the side by side. Robert cherished the time he could watch his kids and grandkids play basketball. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed.

A Visitation will be held Friday, November 24, 2023 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, November 25, 2023 at 10:00 am at Hughey Funeral Home with Reverend Bud Storey officiating. Interment will follow at Black Oak Ridge Cemetery in Bluford.
