Belle L. Phelps
Belle L. (Hayes) Phelps, dies at age 84; Funeral Friday Mrs. Belle L. Phelps, 84 of Route 1 Mount vernon, died at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, at 709 South 24th street, where she had been residing. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Pulley Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. James Drysdale of St. Louis, Mo. officiating. Burial will be in Wolf Prairie Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Pulley Funeral Home, where friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Thursday. Mr. Phelps was born December 21, 1883 in Jefferson County, the daughter of Hiram and Awlda (Fults) Hayes. On July 16, 1901, in Jefferson County, she was married to John Phelps, who preceded her in death in 1958. Survivors include one son, Alva Phelps of Mount Vernon; four daughters, Mrs. Inez Harris, Mrs. Leilia Majors, Mrs. Edith Ford, and Mrs. Helen Smith, all of Mount Vernon; Three sisters, Mrs. Clara Alexander and Mrs. Bessie Corriel of Mount Venron and Mrs. Nell Wilson of Jacksonville; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Phelps was a member of the Marcoe Pentecostal Church.
