Hilda M. Phelps, 85, of Mt. Vernon, died 7:20 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

She was born Saturday, Sept. 10, 1927, in Mt. Vernon, daughter of Burtice and Elizabeth (Wells) Brown.

She married Elvin V. “Buck” Phelps on Saturday, Sept. 12, 1945, in Morganfield, Ky.; and he preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 1991.

Hilda was a clerk in the flower department of Dobb’s Bargain Town in Mt. Vernon for several years and was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by daughters, Joyce M. Mitchell of Mt. Vernon and Debra Ann Bevis and husband Gary of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren, Darren Mitchell of Texico, Alan Mitchell and wife April of Dix, Jenny Jett and Rodney Roberson of Mt. Vernon, Aaron Wright and wife Kitty of Mt. Vernon, Jeremiah Wright of Mt. Vernon and Nathan Wright and Chelsia of Mt. Vernon; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Makayla Mitchell, Brianna and Dylan Jett and Skyelyn and Brokelynne Wright; sisters, Rosella Marcum of Mt. Vernon and Wilma McMahan of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Leroy Brown and Lester Brown; and one sister, Betty McMahan.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Vernon with Jon Cook officiating. Interment will be at Bethel Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
