James Clifford Phelps
James Clifford Phelps, 60, of Dix died 2:30 p.m. Aug. 1, 2004, at his home. He was a farmer and former coal miner. Mr. Phelps was born April 27, 1944, in Boyd to Harold J. and Cora Mae (Harvey) Phelps. He married Donna F. (Hays) Phelps July 2, 1976, at Salem Nazareen Church; she survives. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Osborn Funeral Home in Dix. Jonathan Schnautz will officiate. Burial will follow at Boyd Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Osborn Funeral Home in Dix. Mr. Phelps is survived by his mother, Cora Mae Phelps of Dix; his wife, Donna F. Phelps of Dix; sons James Kevin Phelps of Dix, Terry W. Phelps of Dix and Chris L. Creps of Havelock, N.C.; daughters Rhonda Crawford and husband Danny of Dix, Tina F. Newcomb and special friend Roy Ward of Dix and Tonya L. Benjamin and husband Aaron of Mt. Vernon; 13 grandchildren; a brother, Joseph B. Phelps of Caseyville; and a sister, Neva Sue Carter of Mt. Vernon. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Ada Harvey; and his father. Mr. Phelps was a veteran of the Army National Guard, where he served from Sept. 12, 1964, to May 17, 1970. He was of the Pentecostal faith. He attended Rome Grade School, Woodlawn High School and J.C. College.
