Orville Clayton Phillips
ORVILLE PHILLIPS, Former Assessor, Deputy Clerk Dies Orville Clayton Phillips, a well known lifetime resident of Jefferson county, died at 1:15 o'clock Sunday morning, April 29, 1951, at his home, 407 Harrison Street. His age was 80 years, two months and 28 days. Mr. Phillips was stock foreman at the Mt. Vernon Knitting Company for 25 years. He served two terms as assessor and deputy county clerk of Jefferson county. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Epworth Methodist church, the Rev. Roscoe R. Hollis will vofficiate and burial will be in Oakwood cemetery. The body will remain at Myers Chapel, where friends may call. The body will be removed to the church at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, to lie in state until the funeral hour. Mr. Phillips was born February 1, 1871 in Shiloh township in Jefferson county, the son of Joseph and Rebecca Elizabeth (Phelps) Phillips. On December 2, 1897 he was married to Rebecca Bryant, who survives. Mr. Phillips was a member of the Epworth Methodist Church. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Proctor Phillips of Wichita, Kansas; three daughters, Mrs. Raymond Holland of Evansville, Ind., and Mrs. Roy L. Smith and Mrs. Sam Blackard of Mt. Vernon; one sister, Mrs. Ida Canty of Sheridan, Ill.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.
